Qatar wins big guns at World Airline Awards

PARIS: The World Airline Awards, sometimes called the Oscars of the airline industry, were announced at the Paris Air Show. The best airline chosen in 2017 is Qatar Airways named the best airline in the world. This is controversial as tiny Qatar is currently caught in a diplomatic crisis affecting a number of Middle Eastern states.

Qatar Airways has been voted the best airline in the world.

Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates have suspended relations with Qatar, cutting air, sea and land links. But Qatar Airways is ignoring the line and will add 66 Airbus SE A350 planes over the next five years.

Winning top honors at the World Airline Awards will be another feather in the hat for Qatar Airways. The airline also won honors for the world’s best business class; Best First Class Airline Lounge and Best Airline in the Middle East.

Near us, Thai Airways (TG) received the award for the best economy class in the world; Best spa facility in airline lounge and best inflight catering in economy class.

Etihad Airways wins world’s best first class honors; Best first class seat and best first class inflight catering. This is the third time the airline has won all three First Class award categories at the World Airline Awards.

• Lufthansa is named Europe’s best airline and moves up the world rankings.

• Singapore Airlines business class seat is voted best in the world by customers.

• Star Alliance wins Gold for Best Airline Alliance in the World and Best Airline Alliance Lounge in the World.

No US airline is in the top 10.

This is the fourth time that Skytrax has organized the awards ceremony at the Paris Air Show. The organizers of the Air Show (GIFAS) have provided the fabulous Air and Space Museum as the venue.
